ACAUS is continuing our successful panel series with a special event on disruptive technology and its impact on the future of our profession.

The panel is a joint partnership with the International Federation of Accounting (IFAC) Professional Accountants in Business (PAIB) Committee. Our discussion will focus on the real-world impacts of technology on finance and accounting. the resulting changes to the nature of the work we do, and what we need to do to remain relevant in future. There will be a networking reception following the panel. Our audience will include members of ACAUS as well as the PAIB Committee, members of NASBA and AICPA ands other affiliated professional accountancy organizations.

Our panel discussions will cover several areas, including how the following are presenting opportunities and threats to our profession:

  • Robotics and automation
  • Artificial Intelligence, Cognitive & the Internet of Things
  • Blockchain
  • New Finance Business Models (Fintech)
  • Technology and education – a focus on lifelong learning

 

Our Panelists are experts in this area:

Steven Ibbotson

Stephen Ibbotson joined the IFAC Professional Accountants in Business Committee in January 2016. He was nominated by the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies.

A graduate of Birmingham University (UK), Stephen trained as an ICAEW Chartered Accountant with Ernst and Young in London. After qualifying, he embarked on a career in industry working for BTR PLC, The Littlewoods Organisation PLC, Toy & Hobby Limited, and Avon Products Inc. At Avon, he was UK Financial Director, European Financial Director, and Corporate Controller gaining broad international experience. He has a wide range of experience in transformational initiatives including restructuring, outsourcing, and major systems implementations. Stephen now works for ICAEW and heads up their Finance & Management faculty.

Stuart Chaplin

Stuart Chaplin became a member of the Professional Accountants in Business Committee in January 2015. He was nominated by the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA).

Mr. Chaplin is the Vice President Finance - Risk Management for Shell Trading & Supply. He joined Shell in 1999 and has held a number of positions, most recently the Global Commercial Finance Manager for Shell’s Retail Business and Director of Shell Brands International AG. Previously he was Senior Manager for Shell M&A and Financing, and Head of Business Analysis for Shell globally.

Mr. Chaplin is a fellow of CIMA and has served on its technical committee for a number of years. He is also a member of the Association of Corporate Treasurers and holds an MA in Economics & Management from the University of St Andrews in Scotland.

David Powell

David Powell works for IBM Cognitive Process Services as Global Brand Manager based near Boston, MA. He was previously in a global role as a Finance Leader in the IBM’s Business Analytics Center of Competence, with responsibility for Finance focused solutions using IBM software assets. David was previously with Cognos, now part of the IBM Software Group, joining them at the start of 2007, to build a North American specialist services practice for Cognos’s Consolidations software products.

David has significant experience in Hotel software management and accounting systems, having worked at senior levels at Holiday Inn Worldwide (now Intercontinental (IHG) in Brussels, Belgium) and Starwood Hotels (Braintree, MA). He originally moved to the USA in 1998 as the worldwide process owner for accounting for JD Edwards (ERP software).

David was born and raised in Swansea, Wales. He attended Cardiff University and earned a degree in Accounting and Management Studies. He did further professional studies and qualified as a Chartered Accountant with Deloitte Haskins and Sells. David is an FCA of the England & Wales Institute. He is also the current president of ACAUS and previously led our New England chapter.

Natasha Holbeck

Natasha Holbeck is a partner with Deloitte in their Financial Services Audit Practice and has more than 15 years of public accounting experience. 

Natasha currently serves clients across the spectrum within the investment management sector, including investment companies, exchange traded funds, investment advisors and private funds. Representative Financial Services Industry clients include BlackRock, General Motors Asset Management, ETF Securities and Focus Financial Partners. She has also served clients in the retail, manufacturing and Japanese Services Group. Representative commercial clients included Mitsubishi International Corporation and Chanel International.

Natasha also has a quality control role in the Firm and performs engagement quality reviews of clients within the industry. In addition to serving clients, she actively supports the development of people through instructing at national training programs. Her tenure at Deloitte includes a rotation in the National Office Audit Group where she led projects including developing policies, guidance and training materials relating to financial instruments, alternative investments and fair value measurements.

Natasha is a licensed CPA and Chartered Accountant (South Africa). Natasha represents Deloitte on the NY Metro committee of NEW (Network of Executive Women). She is also a member of the AICPA, AWSCPA and NASBA. She is currently Vice-President of ACAUS.

Sanjay Rughani

Sanjay Rughani joined the IFAC Professional Accountants in Business Committee in June 2015, after being nominated by the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA).

Mr. Rughani is the CEO for Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) in Tanzania. He joined SCB in 1999 and has held various key positions with the bank, including Interim Head – Global Finance Shared Services (FSSC), Head of Finance Operations & Change Management – Africa, Executive Director Finance for Ghana and Area CFO (Ghana, Gambia, Sierra Leone, and Cote d'Ivoire), Executive Director Finance for SCB Tanzania, and Regional Finance Manager for Africa (based in London).

In addition to his role at SCB, Mr. Rughani has also held important external governance positions, including as a Non-Executive Director for Standard Chartered Bank Uganda, on the ACCA/Institute of Management Accountants Accountants for Business Global Forum, Past Chairman of the Ghana Business Coalition Against HIV & AIDS, Past President of Lincoln Community School (and American international school in Ghana), and as a founding member of the FSSC Forum in Kenya.

Mr. Rughani’s professional credentials and qualifications include being a Chartered Accountant, Fellow of the Institute of Information Management Africa (Nigeria), and a member of the ACCA. He holds an MBA in finance, a bachelor’s degree in commerce, and graduate degree in management. He also supports initiatives that are linked to improving impact and capacity for the finance profession and human capacity building particularly in Africa.
